The Hartford Athletic have fired head coach Tab Ramos, the team announced on Monday.
Ramos, who came to Hartford after a decorated career that included playing for the U.S. in three World Cups and serving as an assistant coach for the 2014 World Cup squad, lasted just 22 games with the Athletic.
Hartford is off to a dreadful 2-4-10 start and sits in last place in the USL’s Eastern Conference standings with just 10 points on the season. Only Las Vegas (1-6-8, 9 points) has a worse record.
The 56-year-old Ramos previously served as head coach of the Houston Dynamo in MLS, spending two seasons there before being let go in 2019 following a 6-16-12 finish.
“We would like to thank Tab for his hard work and dedication in his time leading this club,” Hartford Athletic chairman Bruce Mandell said in a statement released by the club. “After careful thought and evaluation, I concluded that the direction of our team would benefit from a different voice. I wish Tab much success in his future opportunities.”
“I want to thank Tab for being part of this project and wish him the best of luck in the future,” Technical Director Ray Reid said. “Unfortunately, the results on the field did not match the effort Tab put in behind the scenes.”
Ramos’ abrupt exit midway through his first full season is certainly not what Hartford fans might have envisioned following his hire last September. He came to the Athletic as a well-known and respected name in U.S. soccer, to the point that Reid, a former national-championship winning coach at UConn, said this of his hire: “As far as I can tell, this is one of the best days in the history of the club.”
Ramos finished with a record of 5-4-13 while in charge.
Assistant Coach and Director of Scouting Omid Namazi will take over as head coach. Namazi has previously coached with the U.S. men’s U18 and U20 teams, the U.S. Women’s National Team, the Iranian National Team, and the Houston Dynamo.
Hartford next takes the field against Loudoun United FC on Monday, July 3.
